Therapist Training

Therapist Training

The Learning Center is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) as a national training site for therapists and instructors of therapists. This recognition is earned by training courses that adhere to stringent training requirements and are qualified to prepare therapists to become Certified Academic Language Therapists (CALT) through the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA).

The Learning Center teaches the Take Flight: A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia (Take Flight), which was written by the Education Team at the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) in Dallas, for use by academic language therapists with children seven years or older with developmental dyslexia. Take Flight builds on the success of the three previous dyslexia intervention programs developed by the staff of TSRHC: (1) Alphabetic Phonics, (2) the Dyslexia Training Program and (3) TSRHC Literacy Program. Take Flight was developed to enable students with dyslexia to achieve and maintain better sight word recognition, reading fluency, reading comprehension, as well as aid in the transition from a therapy setting to "real world" learning. Reading intervention studies, including data collected at the TSRHC Dyslexia Laboratory, have been the impetus for Take Flight and have contributed to its design. Teaching trials in the TSRHC Dyslexia Laboratory and by therapists in collaborating schools have influenced curriculum revision. Objective measurement of student progress has been an integral aspect of the Take Flight project from the onset. Preliminary results from the TSRHC Dyslexia Laboratory support its effectiveness.  Download Therapist Training Applicatin (PDF file).

Take Flight contains the five components of effective reading instruction supported by the National Reading Panel research meta-analysis and mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act, including: (1) phonemic awareness,(2) phonics, (3) vocabulary, (4) fluency and (5) comprehension.
